Remarkable Regionals in Sheffield!

Many congratulations to all 7 of the Wear Valley Amateur Swimming Club athletes who both qualified and competed in the Swim England North East Region 25m Championships held over the weekend of 6th/7th November at Pond’s Forge, Sheffield. The squad, ranging in age from 11 to 17, raced against swimmers from approximately 50 teams from across the region including Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle.

All 7 swimmers competed in 2 to 5 events each and obtained at least 1 personal best (pb). This was very impressive given that 4 of the swimmers have never swam in such a high level gala which included national and international swimmers. Jessica Maughan swam pbs in both the 50m (35.99) and 100m (1.18.67) breaststroke events, Thomas Power also achieved a pb in the 200m breaststroke (2.43.42). A first regional gala for Emily Whitton saw her swim pbs in both the 50m freestyle (28.59) and 50m backstroke (32.62). Annabel Cooper was very pleased with her new 200m freestyle times (2.14.22) and 200m butterfly (2.32.72).

The 3 younger swimmers, who had their first taste of a high level gala, included Daisy Mulholland, Ava Race and Romilly Staines. Daisy swam a pb in the 50m butterfly (40.51), Ava a pb in the 50m backstroke (41.46) and Romilly a pb in the same event (39.15). Well done to all of the swimmers and many thanks to the WVASC coaching staff for a remarkable weekend of racing!
